Last week, Star shareholders separately approved a $300 million rescue deal backed by US casino giant Bally's and existing investor Bruce Mathieson.
However, on Monday Hong Kong investors Chow Tai Fook Enterprises and Far East Consortium threatened to walk away from an agreement to buy Star's stake in the Queen's Wharf casino and
hotel complex for $53 million. It entered into a deal with Hong Kong investors in early
March, after months of warnings about its financial future.
The future of the Brisbane casino has been in doubt for months with Star Entertainment's
shares plummeting in February and the company
failing to post its financial results in March.
So, when a spokesperson for the NSW government this week indicated
it was not inclined to offer the casino operator tax relief
that may benefit Queensland, it sent emotions running hot.
By all accounts, the former Lend Lease chief executive was stunned to discover shortly
after arriving that Star's finances had been drained by huge cost blowouts at its new
Brisbane casino development on the river at Queen's Wharf.
McCann, who has been in the job just a matter of weeks, has made it clear to all that he's not interested in putting a stop gap measure in place, that the deal he's proposing will need to
shore up the company's finances for the long
term. "A buyer would have to be comfortable with a company in Star's circumstances to be a joint landlord and take the risk of default under the agreement." If Star Entertainment was to fall into administration, those administrators would take control of Star's assets,
including Queen's Wharf, and its liabilities.

The project also includes a 1,500 seat-ballroom and a Sky Deck observation platform with 360 degree views. On the art front, Queen’s Wharf Brisbane has announced "Sheila," a five-metre-high, five-tonne bronze sculpture by Brisbane artist Justene Williams, as part of its $3.6 billion public art offering. Azteca will join other unique dining experiences at Queen’s Wharf, including Black Hide by Gambaro, Cucina Regina, Sokyo Brisbane, and Luke Nguyen’s Fat Noodle, as part of The Star Brisbane’s staged opening starting in August. Other recent announcements at Queen’s Wharf include the upcoming launch of Azteca by Potentia Solutions Leisure, the creative force behind Lina Rooftop, Soko Rooftop, Carmen Tequileria, and Claw BBQ. He also addressed the controversies surrounding Star Entertainment Group, which include recent executive changes and regulatory challenges. Future stages will introduce even more luxury accommodations and retail experiences, with opening dates for the Dorsett and Rosewood hotel towers, Velo Café, and high-end retail outlets to be announced in the coming months. This significant milestone comes after nearly two years of construction delays and challenges faced by operator Star Entertainment Group.
"In addition to this we are paying the buyer any interest earned on the investment of the deposit, in line with banking requirements, this can take at least 30 days to redeem
the investment. According to project marketers YPM Group, 90
per cent were sold within the first four weeks of launch in 2022.
Costs for the project have reportedly skyrocketed by
an estimated $1 billion from 2015 when the joint venture, then including The Star Entertainment Group,
agreed to develop Queen’s Wharf for $2.6 billion. The mixed-use
development in the heart of Brisbane hit the headlines again this week as
news broke apartment contracts for the 800-unit project had been cancelled.
QIC also has the development rights to the above-ground
Cross River Rail sites, including Albert Street where it plans to build a commercial tower.
It is unclear whether Star would continue operating the casino
– it expects to finalise the deal by the end of June – as US casino giant Bally’s Corporation has made a play for its other casinos, including on the Gold
Coast.
"Public spaces will be among the first areas to be opened and that includes the viewing platform on Sky Deck, Miller Park and of course the Neville Bonner Bridge linking Queen’s Wharf to South Bank," said Star Brisbane CEO Daniel Finch,
as reported by The Brisbane Times. That process resulted in an acknowledgement that the development would provide a significant opportunity
to contribute not only to the amenity and aesthetics of the Central Business District, but to
the economy of the city. A decision on the preferred proponent for the Queen’s Wharf precinct
is expected in the first half of 2015.
But in October 1992, the Marlin consortium – including Trump, New World and Jacobsen's team – pitched
the most extravagant proposal of the lot. A consortium that included Donald Trump and Hong Kong's powerful Cheng family bid unsuccessfully
to build the Cairns casino in 1992. Donald Trump formed an alliance with the Cheng family through Australian casino bids, which led to them saving the future US president from financial ruin. It provides
direct access between South Bank and the Queen’s Wharf precinct, with connections to William
and George Streets in the CBD. The bridge, with a towering mast 77 meters above sea level, is
expected to see up to 10,000 pedestrian crossings daily.

woes Queensland’s Casino Control Act 1982 was amended in March 2024 to include specific measures
to minimise gambling harm and prevent money laundering.
Fifth and sixth apartment towers have been approved
for the site, offering 1360 apartments, but the construction timing has not been confirmed.
Queen’s Wharf Brisbane includes four luxury hotels, more than 50 bars
and restaurants and 2000 residential apartments between William Street and George Street.
The Neville Bonner Bridge is part of the $3.6 billion Queen's Wharf casino development and included in the budget.
The project’s design partners include Jerde Partnership (lead design in masterplan, urban design and place-making), Cottee Parker (integrated resort development architects), ML Design (heritage architects),
Grimshaw (bridge architects), Urbis (landscape architects, heritage specialists, town planners and urban designers) and Cusp (landscape architects).
However, the development has been heavily criticized by peak built environment groups, including the Australian Institute of
Architects, Australian Institute of Landscape Architects and the Urban Design Alliance, which questioned the
appropriateness of locating a casino so close to the seat of government.
"The Star has been doing everything possible to secure a stable financial future that will provide security for its workers, customers, suppliers, investors, and other stakeholders," they
said. Brisbane’s Queen’s Wharf is expected to accommodate thousands
of visitors annually, boosting the city’s hospitality sector and stimulating new commercial property investments.
